Environmental Geography has collaborated with various international partner universities at regional level and worldwide. The collaboration of the department of Environmental Geography covers education, research, as well as community services with several government and non-government organizations, schools, research institutes, and other universities in Indonesia. There are numerous international collaborations, particularly in terms of joint research during 2012-2019. The program has collaborated with overseas countries includings Japan, Germany, France, New Zealand, Austria, and The Netherland.
In Asian level, the Department of Environmental Geography has also collaborated with Chiba University (Japan) through TWINCLE (Twin College Envoys) from 2012 to 2016. The program covers various activities, including research collaboration, student and staff exchange, guest lectures, and community services by educating high school students in Indonesia. The Department of Environmental Geography also collaborated with other universities across the country (Universitas Indonesia, Institut Pertanian Bogor, and Universitas Udayana) to pair-up graduate student in educational research. In 2017, The department has entered into a collaboration with Nagoya University (Japan) in disaster risk reduction program for earthquake. The program has also worked with China partner universities to understand and collect information on disaster impacts. In 2015 to 2018, the Environmental Geography held joint research with University of Auckland and Canterbury University (New Zealand) in CARED program as a way to improve disaster management practices of local government (in provincial and district level) in Indonesia as a form of community services.
In European areas, The Department of Environmental Geography collaborated with Institute for Water and River Basin Management, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (Germany) through Integrated Water Resource Management Program from 2015 to 2020. In accordance with the program in Germany, The Department of Environmental Geography also collaborated with Universitat Bremen in integrated coastal zone management to analyze the tropical ecosystem and their complexity as a basis for integrated watershed and coastal management. The Department of Environmental Geography also collaborated with Universite Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne from 2012 to 2015 in SEDIMER project, which was aimed to obtain a comprehensive understanding of volcanic process for land used and emergency response planning. On a wider scope, the project involves consortium of several universities and institutions in United States, including USGS, University of South Florida, University of Bristol, and Harvard Kennedy School. The collaboration with Universite Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne was followed with joint research supported by Indonesian Ministry of Research and Higher Education (Kemenristekdikti) in terms of landslide risk and management based on multidisciplinary approach.
The Department of Environmental Geography of UGM has already initiated several cooperations with international higher education institutions as described in the following table. Moreover, to ensure the sustainability and development of the International Undergraduate Program in Environmental Geography program in the future, the department is currently initiating a double degree cooperation with several partner universities. The universities are the University of Utrecht, University of Groningen, Vrije University Amsterdam, Radboud University Nijmegen, National Taiwan Normal University, and National Central University Taiwan.
